Any hunters that have ever done much supplemental feeding for their deer herd where black bears like to roam are well aware of just how destructive these critters can be. They will destroy a feeding station that has not had some bear proofing precautions taken. Typically, this means elevating the feeder well above reach of the bear on a steel cable with a manual boat winch to raise and lower the feeder.
Not only are these guys destructive, they will lay around and make pigs of themselves a your tab. They can really put away the feed. If they ever start leaving bear scat around the feeder that will deter deer from using the feeding station.
I have a bear plaguing my stand sites this season and he is a trophy. He looks as big around as a 55 gallon drum. His right ear has just a few white hairs on the edge of it and I have been able to identify him at 2 different stands that are 4-5 miles apart.
I like to broadcast feed rather than use a feeder and I will put out a whole sack of corn at a time. A bear will come in at night and lay down and just start lippin’ it up. Actually, the Coons are almost as bad, sometimes they bring their own paper sack!
I have gotten some pretty neat pictures of him lounging around feasting on my corn. Hope you enjoy them….They were expensive!
